The Cebu People’s Multipurpose Cooperative (CPMPC) was organized in December 1972 through the efforts of NATCCO Network- Visayas (VICTO). This followed a successful experience in cooperative organizing at Hinundayan in Southern Leyte, an East Visayas province of the Philippines. It was then called the People’s Credit Cooperative Inc. (PPCI) and was holding office at Borromeo Bldg., F. Ramos St., Cebu City.
CPMPC started with 26 members with an initial share capital of One Thousand Pesos (Php 1,000.00), roughly about US $147.49 then. It was officially registered with the Bureau of Agricultural Cooperative Development (BACOD) as a credit cooperative in 1975, and re-registered with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) as a multipurpose cooperative in 1993.
CPMPC experienced its most challenging decade from the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. In 1976, it experienced its first bout of high delinquency rates on members’ loans; while in 1978, it had its share of organizational crisis characterized by factionalism within the Board of Directors (BOD) that required three General Assemblies to settle. From 1980 to 1985, CPMPC struggled to survive. By the end of 1985, membership slid to 906 from 1,500 in the previous year. Rebuilding happened in 1986.
A major part of its rebuilding was the formation and strengthening of democratized structures through the chapters which started in 1973. CPMPC members validated this point during a social audit conducted in 2001. The zonal formation started in 1992 and the branch offices began in 1996. By September 2004, CPMPC had a total of 46 chapters spread out in 8 zones and served by 8 branch offices and the main office.
The rebuilding efforts have borne fruit. In 1993, CPMPC was able to construct its own building with the help of PLAN International. As of 2005, it expanded to a total of 9 branch offices, covering the north, central and southern parts of Cebu province. The branch offices are found in Mandaue, Lapulapu, Talamban and Liloan in the north, Tabunok in the south and Tisa, Pasil, Blessed Sacrament, Salinas in the central part.
And as of January 2007, People’s Cooperative was expanding its Horizons through People Empowerment, it expanded to a total of 14 branch offices, namely; Head Office, F. Llamas Branch, Pasil Branch, Blessed Sacrament Branch, Tabunok Branch, Salinas Branch, Talamban Branch, Mandaue Branch, Lapulapu Branch, Liloan Branch, Bogo Branch, Bantayan Island Branch, Carcar Branch and Danao Branch. |
